Southwest Shakespeare Company's production of

Macbeth
by William Shakespeare

Dark, mystical, dreamlike and fractured -
all words that can be applied to the Southwest Shakespeare's production of Macbeth.
The story of an admired warrior that falls prey to the want of power, rewarding him with madness and death.

Included on this page is artwork about Shakespeare's "Macbeth"
or other graphic work that reflects in some way the Southwest Shakespeare's concept
for their production of "The Tragedy of Macbeth".

They aren't your normal fare of costume research pictures, none are graphics of clothing either period or modern.
All are dreamlike, some fractured and nightmarish.
But all lend something to the concept and provide creative fodder for bringing a dreamlike world to life, on stage.

"Fade to Black" by Nanci Jennings, from White Tower Graphics (below)
provides a backdrop for the nightmare of Macbeth.
He is drawn into the world of mysticism by the words of the witches, and his desired to be what they see.
Do they manipulate him to fulfill their words?
Or do they enchant the world around him to unfold before him in fulfillment of prophecy.

The want of power is a force reconciled with only by pure intent, honor and integrity.
Something Macbeth, a noble warrior, casts aside when the glare of greed casts its "spe
ll" upon him.

.. Minimal, suggested reality, subtle lines ...

As in our dreams, reality is distorted, merging with the surrealism of the mystical
and the bitter depths of Man's darkest nature,
forced into an unholy and unnatural union barely resembling the convivial reality in which we,
as a "civilized" society, are accustomed to experience.
And it is to this maelstrom of nightmarish emotion and murderous treachery that
Shakespeare first introduces us, and into which he then hurls us, headlong!

For the Southwest Shakespeare's show of Macbeth -
you will enter the realm of Macbeth's mind and walk in his nightmare.
The set - the costumes - the elements of the show will support without distraction, the
Tragedy of Macbeth
